Contemporary scheme in Conservation Area

A simple yet contemporary design for two 2 bed houses replaced an existing dilapidated workshop on a backland site in a conservation area. The approach was to reverse the roof form extant on the workshop to enable a second floor to be installed in the existing volume whilst ensuring the amenity of neighbours and the proposed building were respected. There were very few comments raised by the council on account of the quality of presentation and excemplary design. The services for both houses were all cleverly located within the party wall for ease of installation and maintenance.

The structure of the butterfly roof was designed to cantilever away from the party wall, with a strip of windows below the structure to allow for both the expression of the narrowing elegant and simple roof form and to bring much needed light into the property without increasing overlooking.
